Civic Engagement Resources for Students Enrolled in a Tufts Degree Program

All SMFA students in a Tufts degree program have funding and other resources available to them for developing community engagement practices through both the Tufts Career Services and the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service.

Tufts Career Services Funded Summer Internships

Tufts Career Services offers 25 grants for non-profit or public sector summer internships. Funding is available for students doing unpaid internships for a minimum of 350 hours over the summer. Selected students will receive $3,500. Students must secure an internship prior to the application deadline of March 28, 2008.  More info here.

Tisch College Funding Streams

Active Citizenship Summer Fellows (ACS)

SMFA students are eligible to apply for competitive funding streams available through Tisch College's ACS program. SMFA students can receive $3,500 to implement civically engaged art projects in any country of the world, or in Somerville, MA.  More info here.

Tisch College Scholars Program

SMFA students may apply to this highly selective program that engages students from the Spring of their freshman year until graduation. As part of a broader program including mentorship and class work, each of these students work on special projects, receive funding to implement them, and take part in a capstone experience with funding of up to $5,000.  Students must apply in their first or second year.  More info here.

Art, Activism, and Community: Visual Art and Social Change

A course offered to both SMFA/Tufts and Tufts students, taught by Tisch College staff member Mindy Nierenberg and offered through Tufts' Experimental College, this course fills an important educational gap for art engagement practice.  How do artists address social issues? Can art transform individual lives and communities? How can art serve as a force for creating public dialogue? Are there different aesthetics for art with a social or political message?  More info here.
