Eulogio Guzman is a published
illustrator and photographer. The recipient of several awards, he has served as
a cultural consultant for Walt Disney Imagineering and has curated a number of
exhibitions.
But it’s teaching,
says Guzman, that keeps him honest.
“Often during the artmaking process,
my ideas do not mature enough,” says Guzman, who teaches visual and critical
studies at the SMFA. “But
they develop through the work in the classroom. When I return to my art, I
engage it on a deeper level—and my work gains a depth it did not have
before.”
Guzman draws energy
from the classroom in other ways as well. “As a teacher, you have the
opportunity to introduce students to a whole new world of ideas, cultures, and
worldviews,” he notes. “The visual sophistication of the students here
challenges me to grow in my own ability to explore the meaning and significance
of images.”
“It's wholly
satisfying to know that you have contributed to the intellectual and emotional maturity that students will
use to inform their own work and life.”
