Why SMFA?

Studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is a rare and energizing experience, richly textured and individual. Here are just a few of the unique opportunities you’ll encounter at SMFA:

You’ll have the freedom you need to cultivate your skills and pursue your passions.
At SMFA, there are no artificial limits to your interests. Instead of majors, we have 15 different program areas of study in studio art—from Film to Painting to Text and Image Art. You work with a faculty advisor to generate your own personalized curriculum—mixing knowledge, practice, and media. More about our areas of study…

You’ll work with working artists.
Our 150 faculty members are all working artists—people who are pushing the boundaries of their own work. They’re experienced, open-minded, and supportive; they serve as teachers and mentors; and they love the art of teaching. Learning here is personal and intense. More about our faculty …

You’ll find inspiration—and more—in the heart of a great city.
Home to 79 colleges and universities and 56 museums, Boston is a great place to live, work, and play. You’ll visit galleries, explore Harvard Square, walk along the Charles River, listen to music. In the heart of this vibrant, energetic city, you—and your art—will thrive. More …

You’ll have access to a world-class museum and a top university.
Next door to the Museum School are the world-renowned collections and exhibitions of the MFA. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts as often as you like—it’s free (and inspiring). Students in our undergraduate and graduate  degree programs study with Tufts University faculty and receive a Tufts degree—and all our students can access the university’s resources.
