Director of Marketing and Communications

Reporting to the deputy director and dean of the School and supervising the press coordinator and Web administrator, the director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for creating and implementing marketing communications strategies for the Museum School to promote enrollment, fundraising, exhibitions, and public programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-year communications plan to achieve Museum School marketing communications objectives utilizing publications, advertising, public relations, and the Web site.

Write and edit all publications as well as material for the dean of the School’s reports to the MFA, trustees, and governors, the Web site, and other materials as needed.

Work closely with departments of the School while directing and implementing concept, design, production, and printing of all marketing communications – more than 50 projects each year.

Oversee the collection of student, faculty, and alumni imagery for promotional uses.

Hire and manage photographers for School and event photography.

Oversee the Web site and public relations efforts: supervise and collaborate with the press coordinator and web administrator to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of both.

Maintain a consistent institutional image and identity in all marketing communications including promotional materials, Web site, advertising, etc.

Formulate and manage budgets of approximately $800,000. Monitor expenditures against budget and provide ad-hoc updates to Senior Staff. 

Oversee the collection and analysis of primary and secondary market research data and adjust strategies accordingly.

Plan and place national, regional, and local advertising.

Manage consultants (designers, writers) and relationships with media outlets to ensure that budgets, deadlines, and quality standards are maintained.

In coordination with MFA Purchasing, negotiate contract terms and provide regular evaluations of vendor performance.

Provide Senior Staff with benchmarks for key communications operations (marketing, public relations, and web) against internal goals and relative to peer institutions.

Perform other related duties as required or directed.

Preparator/Audio-Visual Specialist
Under the direction of the SMFA curator; assists and shares responsibility with the exhibitions manager in all technical and associated administrative duties of mounting exhibitions and presenting public programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Construction and installation of all exhibitions. Includes carpentry, painting, unpacking and packing, storage, installation (including audio-visual equipment) and other handling of delicate objects, and sensitive equipment.

Responsible for providing A-V services for SMFA lectures and presentations (responsibility shared with exhibitions manager).

Responsible for the installation of all Area Exhibitions: Reviews exhibition proposals; Identifies the scope of installation, structural and electrical issues; Reviews them with the exhibitions manager; Assists and supervises installation to make sure that they meet installation standards of the Exhibitions department and do not constitute public safety hazard.

Responsible for the organization and upkeep of the exhibitions project room.

Responsible for attendance reports.

Assists in the training and coordinating of student staff in procedures for installation and handling of artwork and equipment.

In absence of the exhibitions manager, oversees the student installers and security staff.

Assists in general gallery maintenance, as required.

Copies and catalogues all video documentation related to visiting artist lectures.

Maintains all equipment, including electronic and audio, and reports any unusual conditions to the exhibitions manager.

Research of equipment and supplies needs, monitoring of inventory.

Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Museum level experience in handling art, art shipping, and working with fine art objects.

Experience as a projectionist or with audio/visual equipment in an exhibitions, theater, or production setting.

Experience as interior carpenter. Working knowledge of hand and power tools. Experience with partitioned wall construction.

Experience as an interior painter or on interior job sites.

Ability to work well in a diverse, creative community.

A full time position with high demand periods and pressing deadlines. Flexibility in working hours is required.

Assistant Registrar

Under general direction of the registrar, will have responsibility for the coordination of the Registrar’s Office as well as all data entry and registration for Day, Graduate, Continuing Education, and Tufts students; seven telephone lines; electronic mail; implementation of decisions made by the r egistrar; and coordination of Review Boards, registration, and academic  progress. Work very closely with students, staff, and faculty, and with material that is often confidential and of a sensitive nature.  Provide a high level of customer service and individualized attention to members of the SMFA community as appropriate. Coordinate with Admissions staff on application status of students. Coordinate with the Business Office on financial problems. Assist the associate registrar in facilitating the Review Board process, including communicating and collecting information from faculty and students on availability and scheduling. Maintain office inventory and supply requests. Bachelor’s Degree required and 1 to 3 years of experience working in higher education, preferably in a Registrar’s Office. Previous experience with student information databases required, Jenzabar knowledge preferred. Knowledge of PC based computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, and database systems. Requires the ability to work in a hectic fast paced environment.  Must have good judgment and reasoning.  Must be able to work independently on tasks that require intense concentration for long periods of time. Must have excellent analytical and communication skills.

Assistant Director of Student Life

Under the general direction of the dean of students, and working as part of the Student Affairs team, the a ssistant d irector of student life develops and implements all aspects of the offices student community building initiatives,and student support systems. Manage day-to-day operations of support programs. Organize, facilitate, and implement events and activities that promote community and meet the needs of a diverse population. Facilitate, supervise, and support student groups and organizations. Stay current on health and wellness issues and trends. Promote awareness of programs and events through online calendar, postings, e-mail, information sessions, and other communication vehicles. Advise enrolled international students on visa requirements and changes of status. Stay current on all immigration changes, trends, and legal requirements. Act as the primary administrative contact and liaison for School Exchange Programs, AICAD Mobility Program, New York Studio Program, Skowhegan Program, and visiting student requests. Assist the dean of students with all aspects of the Orientation program. Work with staff, faculty and student leaders to develop programs that engage, inform, and orientate new students to the School. Work with the dean of students to  coordinate and implement all aspects of the Student Orientation Leader Program, including: pre- and post-decision notifications, interview and hiring procedures, training schedule, training programming, training reservations, and group meetings and events. Oversight of Student Activities Fund and Student Group budget line; advise SBInc (Student Body Inc.) on proper and responsible use of funds in accordance with budgetary restraints and funds, using guidelines established by the group. Provide personal and/or academic counseling to students and make referrals for additional services as needed. Assist with general office functions and major events cover functions of other office staff when necessary.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required. Experience in an art school setting and/or art background preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Organizational skills and attention to detail required. Must be proficient in Windows environment, including experience with: Word, Excel, and Access. A team mentality, enthusiasm, self-motivation, patience, and sense of humor are important.

Part-Time Lecturer, Department of Visual and Critical Studies

The Department of Visual and Critical Studies of Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, announces a search for a lecturer to teach a total of two courses in one or two semesters for the academic year 2008–09. Our department seeks a scholar with demonstrated expertise in non-Western area(s) such as African, African Diaspora, Oceanian, Islamic, Pre-Columbian, and/or Colonial Latin American visual culture.

Experience and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching are strongly desired. Critical and theoretical perspectives on visual art and cultural studies are defining aspects of this interdisciplinary department. Candidates must have the ability to teach survey and smaller upper-level courses in their non-Western field of expertise.

We are seeking a colleague who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic and artistic community. Hence, the desire to teach in an art school setting and to interact with studio courses is an essential component of this appointment.

The Department of Visual and Critical Studies serves approximately 500 students. The Tufts University/SMFA partnership offers a BFA and dual degree BFA-BA degrees in several studio concentrations and emphasizes a cross-disciplinary focus.

Requirements: Ph.D. or ABD in art history required.

Will assist instructors through posing for student artists as requested. Requires ability to pose for long, short and gesture poses. Must be able to remain still for 15–20 minutes and must be at least 21 years of age. Scheduled as needed on a temporary basis.
